The previous owners of this new but shingle style home were not cooks and the kitchen was very modern with little light and low ceilings. A nanny suite next to the kitchen enabled the two spaces to be combined into a great room. The area was gutted and flat ceilings were traded for cathedral ceilings. Utilizing attic space above the garage allowed a connected second level playroom that opened to the new kitchen. Window sizes were increased resulting in a light filled large family room.
The cabinets were custom made in cherry and maple with a rare inlay banding that was discovered stored in a warehouse for 60 years. The dishwasher was raised several feet above the floor to make load dishes easier. A table, designed to complement the geometry of the kitchen, sits on wheels for ease of cleaning and rests before a window seat in the new living space.
This new open arrangement allows the cook to be with family while preparing dinner and works especially well when entertaining friends.
